the boy and the Ox , a print in 97 editions was commissioned by Mavida, Reggio Emilia, one of the very few high quality hand printing art book publishers in Italy, realising artists ' books from the idea of concieving to the final realisation - all handmade, handbound, with traditional typo techniques dated back to the period of Gutenberg
Books made with linocut prints were all intervened by the artists themselves, with each single print being slightly different, hence each book is a single unique work of art
Hand printed by Mavida, this print was a natural consequence of the studies I made during the course of the year in 1985-1989, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence-
I was interested in Zen, a way of sharing my Eastern upbringing with my western classmates and professors
the meeting with Professor Manfredi allowed me to go back once again to my oriental roots, to find delight in the spontaneous expression of brush works, thus linocut prints, a medium closest to Chinese wood block printing
It was under this unbiased attitude towards being an oriental that made my stay in Florence, Italy memorable
Thus, at the return of Hong Kong to China, I picked this zen story to express how one would perhaps be on the way of an eventual spiritual awakening- from the boy who lost trace of an ox ( spiritual self ) to the boy who found his ox, and how at the end he forgot both himself ( his ego ) and the ox ( his spirit ) - in the sense of being fully in tune with the universe, ( being one with the ten thousand things- as the Chinese sayings go ) .
yet this illumination is still not enough- a moment would come when he returns truly to his original self- this is a level beyond words, and the degree of this understanding varies , according to one's innate makeup of his spiritual self
Whether it is zen or not zen, all that lies is one's purity of hearts
so pure that at one point, nothing exists yet all coesist, a transparent yet forever changing reality, rich and empty at the same time
