Shadows 

David Hockney once noticed that Chinese paintings do not have shadows.

It was an interesting observation.

So I began a series of works during my stay in Hong Kong :

to paint everyday life with the idea of shadows in mind

flowers we buy, fruits we eat

all on different kinds of traditional rice paper

mostly  types I never got a chance to purchase when I was in Italy

the first series were done in watercolour and pigments bought in Florence with Florentine binder 

when my binder for making gouache finished, I began binding them in oils

my everyday life is lived with limitations and unlimited joy of experimentation: when I finished one kind of binder, another kind became a new way of seeing

the Still lifes look banale as they resemble of studies I did when I first learned how to paint. But in the banalness, I was reminded of the very joy of painting, firstly discovered-the initial sparks of inspiration, though now coupled with some sophistication with a slight touch of melancholy, perhaps.

the meaning of being young in the way of seeing perhaps is another kind of shadows: something that follows you deep down and something that gives you the kind of hope you need in order to move forward.

那女孩告訴我們

是從她菓園裏的菠蘿樹剛採下來的
