Dipinto da Viaggio of Mauro Betti , a poem by Bernadette in English and Chinese

( edited and rewritten in Italian by Mauro Betti )

Dipinto portatile, piccolo,

Questi tre piccoli amici , parlano in tono soave,

In the eighties when I was a painting student at the Florence Academy Of Fine Arts, my Professor Loffredo happened to be sick for sometime. To replace him, a young Professor named Mauro Betti came during those periods when Loffredo was absent. We students were surprised to find the openness of this young Professor, who was always available to help out and give us encouragement.

Years passed and most of my professors have retired, or close to a hundred years old. It was , therefore, so nice to find Professor Mauro still there, as if his presence there had the power to bring back the happy memories I had at the Academia di Belle ArtI di Firenze.

So during a quick sort of lunch Break, we managed to chat a little bit about the past as well as getting updated with each other’s works.

The catalogue given to me by Professor Mauro has a little piece of work that caught my attention: it is a sort of triptych, but partly superimposing one another.

i found it very intriguing.

They are meant to be portable, according to the old traditions when portable paintings were made when one had to travel- they were either icons or later , panel paintings during the Renaissance, I gathered.

So I wrote a little poem, to commemorate this piece of interesting work and of my visit to the Academy after thirty years

Travelling Paintings of Mauro Betti

Portable paintings

Small

Very small scale paintings

One circular

One square

-The biggest

Not larger than cm20

The smallest

Another square canvas

The circular one placed on top left corner of the pink and sky blue square canvas

The smaller one placed on the lower right hand side

On top of the central pink and sky blue canvas

As friends

These three small panels

As friends who speak to each other

In tones

Soft yet dynamic

Like the circular spot of black

Where the tiny circle of moon like shape

Announces something

Mysterious

Then all of a sudden

Instead of a rainbow up on the top

We see a twin element of hope

Red and white

As if

After the sky dark as velvet

Deep in thoughts

All of a sudden

Will meet the brightest light

And a loving-red that gives lasting promise

With the sharpest edge of eloquence

The other tiny friend

Small and almost

Humble

Sitting there

Awaits of an interaction

With his twin brother

A big brother

Whose pinkish presence

Seems to sweep across his inner universe with a loving redness that is born within

which never fades

In order that

This tiny brother

Of a humble origin

Could speak a language

That is balanced

Yet articulated

From the pale sky blue

These two brothers communicate to each other

Without words

Yet the words are

There

Within

The close relationship of these three canvases is intimate and almost secretive

Are they

three canvases

Or

Three friends

Or

Three selves

Or

are they three panels

Of the

Old days

Such as a triptych

Or even a new version of the sacred

Altarpiece

Of

A Renaissance past?

Such is the strength of the dialogue

Of the three intimate panels

Of my Professor

Mauro Betti

Thank you Professor

For such a beautiful catalogue and

The story you told me about your portable painting

Happy painting

Mauro Betti
